I have been incarcerated in a California State Prison for two years now. My experience so far with the healthcare system here has been both positive and negative with a lot of room for improvement.
On the positive side they do provide all or most vaccines available like flu shots and Covid vaccines. They also have the Soboxyn program to help people get off drugs and rehabilitate.
On the negative side they do not take our medical needs and doctor appointments seriously.
I’ve learned that the only way to get results with medical is to file a grievance about an issue before they take it seriously.
It’s very unfortunate we have to go so far just to get our medical needs taken care of properly.
I’ve learned that their overall medical staff lack a basic understanding of Diabetes.
The medical staff will and have changed insulin orders without communicating with their patients as they have done with me. I’ve had my dosage of insulin changed multiple times without my consent or knowledge. If I hadn’t been observant and checked my dosage myself,
I would have passed out or had a Diabetic episode which could have ended up very bad or even fatal.
I have a skin condition that I have been dealing with for the past couple of years that they haven’t been able to properly diagnose and treat it. I get scabs on my body that leave scars and show up randomly. It is very frustrating that they don’t or haven’t resolved the problem.
I go about every 6 months to address the issue with the hope of them finding and treating my condition.
With the latest attempt in resolving my skin issue the doctor prescribed me an antibiotic called
Doxycycline that is not recommended for Diabetics as it can and does cause hyperglycemia which is low blood sugar where my glucose steadily dropped to the point where I could have had a Diabetic episode and fallen into a Diabetic coma if not treated right.
I actually had to go man down and be taken in a Medical Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV) to central health because my blood sugar would not stop dropping and I didn’t why.
I later found it was due to the Doxycycline that I had been prescribed and quit taking it.
I believe the Doctors and medical staff need to take us more seriously. I also believe that Diabetes awareness and training should be given at least once a year to all medical staff.
I hope with the help of our organization we can find the right methods to make this a reality.
