We interviewed Espo earlier this year at the State Prison he resides at.
He had cataract removal surgery on his left eye on December 14, 2021 then on January 06, 2022 he had an intraocular lens implanted.
Due to complications on July 19, 2022 he had to have a second surgery. After his surgery he was prescribed Tobradex and Prednisolone eye drops but instead was given lactose solution.
He took as prescribed for four days he was to use the drops twice a day. Meaning for four days twice a day he was taking the wrong medicine. Espo realized something was seriously wrong as his eye started to swell up and burn.
At this point he becomes aware that he was given the wrong prescription when he reads the visible label it says the correct prescription but when he pulled the prescription label off the bottle there was another label under it where it was written & shows to be Lactose solution.
He immediately reached out to medical and was taken to an outside facility that provided care for him and gave him the correct medications that he should’ve been taking from the beginning.
At this point sadly the damage was done and is irreversible. Espo is now blind in his left eye.
This is just another story of neglect and medical mishap behind the wall….
This mistake cost a man his eye sight in one eye – This should not have happened.
Hopefully with your help we will make changes to how inmates are medically treated.
Thank you
